Canadian-invented machine cleans and disinfects N95 masks for reuse by health workers

The Clean Flow Mini was invented to sanitize apples and other produce, but owner Paul Moyer realized it might be able to help fight COVID-19 by cleaning used masks.

Moyers’ Apple Products in Beamsville, Ontario, makes gourmet candy apples. After a 2015 listeria outbreak in California was traced back to some other candy apples, owner Paul Moyer decided to find a way to prevent food-borne illness from affecting his own company’s products, and worked with a University of Guelph food scientist to build a solution. The result was the Clean Flow Mini, a machine that not only kills listeria, but also nearly all other pathogens (only 0.01 per cent make it out alive) using ozone, peroxide gas, and UV light.

When COVID-19 broke out, and Moyer heard about an imminent shortage of the N95 masks needed to protect front-line health care workers, he wondered if the Clean Flow Mini might be able to help. He and his workers ran a bunch of tests on masks deliberately coated with viruses, and they came out sanitized. Health Canada gave the go-ahead, and Clean Works, the company that builds the machines, ramped up its production. They’re now building 15 machines a week to meet demand from health care facilities across Canada.
